This course is open to both beginners and previous participants of the Irish workshops run by the WCCC. The relaxed atmosphere of the workshops will allow beginners to learn the programme while at the same time taking on board the experiences of the previous participants which would come up for discussion during the session.
The course of three workshops would expand on the earlier course content and monitor and resolve any practical issues experienced in implementing the programme to date. The tutor will use elements of the HighScope Education through Movement Programme for presenting these workshops. The presentations would also involve linking the programme Aistear.
The early years are golden for language development. Research in the last fifteen years tells us that learning a second language from birth to 6 years is child’s play. Experience has shown that the best way to achieve the early introduction of a language is by using simple rhymes and songs in a fun way with young children.

Childcare Professionals' Development Day Focusing on Literacy & Numeracy
|
This day will focus on numeracy & literacy and link in with Síolta & Aistear.
Starting with Story
Creating a love of books and stories at a young age lays the foundation for children’s literacy development. This workshop is aimed at childcare professionals interested in learning how books can be used as the basis for extending literacy and topic work with children.
Language leads to literacy
This workshop will discuss the important links between oral language development and literacy, and provide you with practical strategies for paving the way for children to read and write.
Numeracy
Early childhood settings play an important role in developing children's early mathematical language and ideas. This workshop will look at ideas and suggestions on how to enhance this work.
Science workshop
The world around us and how it works is always something that interests young children in particular. Many of the things adults just take for granted are the source of questions for children. You all have come across the questions they pose: why is the sky blue? is an old favourite. Science holds the answers to these questions. Included in these exploring and thinking experiments will be aspects of numeracy, which are all important to quantifying and explaining scientific information
